Ever the trend-setter, Ruby Marie began life as Austria’s first department store. Elegant floors offering everything from haute couture and homeware to a restaurant and a viewing terrace bustled with the city’s chicest and she looked set for a life of luxury.
For several decades, the store thrived as one of Vienna’s top shopping spots and even boasted a cinema for a spell. Sadly, by the turn of the century, with department stores slipping into decline, Marie’s future looked uncertain.
A true pioneer never loses her spark though. In 2015, at the age of 104, Marie made a suitably stylish comeback.
From luxe lamps and plush sofas to vintage posters and tailoring tools, the 24-hour bar recalls the opulence and energy of her 1960s heyday, while the modern menu includes a healthy breakfast and barista coffee, eclectic cocktails and tasty snacks.
Marie’s rooms all reflect our Lean Luxury style, with a big, comfy bed, a rainfall shower and soft, fluffy towels. Warm cherry wood contrasts with edgy artwork, while a Marshall amp is on hand for your soundtrack.
Marie’s a four-minute walk from Wien-Westbahnhof, which is just 30 minutes from the airport.
As a former department store, Ruby Marie’s mere steps from Vienna’s top shopping street, Mariahilfer Strasse. Lined with international brands and quirky boutiques, it’s a great place for some serious retail therapy.
As well as its impressive array of shops, the 7th district, known as Neubau, is characterised by a lively creative scene. Nearby Spittelberg is a prime example: by day a cluster of quaint cobbled streets dotted with independent shops and galleries, by night the vibrant haunt of students and artists alike.
Vienna’s historic centre, along with sights including St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Hofburg, is a six-minute U-Bahn trip or a short stroll away.
Wien-Westbahnhof is three minutes away on foot, from where the airport’s 30 minutes by train with a quick change en route.
Ruby Marie guests get an exclusive discount just across the street from our front door.
A 24-hour ticket costs just €25, and you can come and go as much as you like. Simply park your car, get a regular ticket, then ask our hosts at the bar to exchange it for a Ruby parking ticket.

Like you, we travel a lot. And wherever we go, we expect three things: a great night’s sleep, a powerful shower and top-notch connections – both to the city and the WiFi.
What we’re less keen on is paying for extras we never use. In dynamic cities bursting with Michelin stars and foodie pop-ups, room service sandwiches just don’t cut the mustard.
So we set out to create the best of both worlds – hotels with style and substance, but none of those expensive extras.
It’s what we call Lean Luxury.
To us, luxury means laid-back comfort in characterful surroundings, right in the heart of the city.
The lean part is all about being smart with space, streamlining things behind the scenes and doing away with the things you don’t need.
This innovative approach saves us and you money, without compromising on comfort.
