A real bright spark

Ruby Emma Hotel & Bar

Get to know Emma

Perched on a meander in the Amstel, the Omval area that Ruby Emma calls home was for decades the powerhouse of Amsterdam.

The gas supplied from the Zuidergasfabriek helped light and heat the city, along with locals’ cooking stoves and coffee pots.

These days, the newly formed Amstelkwartier is a more idyllic spot, but the focus on energy remains.

Taking our lead from the mariners who tacked their sails to harness the wind on the river’s tight turns, Emma’s all about using the power of nature.

From the thermal aquifer that stores our hot water to the building’s smart façade that reacts to the elements to regulate the temperature in the hotel, green energy runs through Emma’s veins.

Inside, the rooms all feature our Lean Luxury touches, including a big, comfy bed, aromatherapy Ruby Care products, and soft, fluffy towels, along with a Marshall amp to add some oomph to your audio.

Spaklerweg Metro station is a few minutes’ walk away, from where Amsterdam’s main station is a ten-minute hop. The airport’s less than half an hour away, with a quick change en route.

Bar

From wind-powered gadgets and hand-wound machines to pedal- and potato-powered contraptions, the bar is abuzz with alternative energy.

And when it comes to style, we’ve taken a steer from the 60s, when wind power took off again in Amsterdam.

Mid-century modern and pre-loved pieces in bright, fresh tones showcase natural materials and the beauty of reusing and recycling.

It’s an inspiring space where people come together to share tall tales and grand plans, catch an up-and-coming band, or just unwind with a skilfully shaken cocktail.

Find an armchair in a cosy nook, grab a table, or perch at the bar – our designers have ensured everyone has a comfy spot.

Breakfast

Our healthy, locally sourced breakfast buffet with fresh barista coffee and organic tea will set you up for the day ahead.

Tuck into fresh fruit and superfood cereals, along with wholegrain bread from the local bakery and a delicious selection of meats and cheeses.

Want to start your day the Amsterdam way? Try our local favourite: ossenworst. This spiced, smoked beef sausage is best served with bread and lashings of mustard – delicious.

Galley

Fancy a drink, forgotten your toothbrush or need a quick ironing fix? Head to a Galley – you’ll find them on floors two to six.

There, you’ll find hot water and free organic tea, along with an ironing board and iron.

There’s also a Maxi Bar where you can buy everything from soft drinks and snacks to an umbrella or a toothbrush.

Guest Perks

Music’s a big part of life at Emma. That’s why you can hire an electric guitar for an impromptu jam, tune into Ruby Radio in your room, and even catch live acts in the bar.

Of course, every musician needs a muse, and ours is Amsterdam. The best way to explore is on two wheels, so rent a Ruby bike and get pedalling.

Ruby Shop

Loved your stay? Now get the goodies. From tea, coffee, and scented candles to Ruby Care shampoos and shower gels, you’ll find all you need to unwind when you get home.

Sustainability

Since the start, we’ve taken many steps to be sustainable, and Emma is our greenest hotel yet.

Created using as much recycled material as possible, the ‘living’ façade of glass and aluminium is designed to react intelligently to the weather outside.

So, on bright winter days, the shutters open to let in the warmth. On hot summer days, they close to offer shade, saving energy all year round. The system is even smart enough to know when you’re in your room. So there’s no risk of the shutters opening as you step out of the shower.

Inside, clever, circular systems reuse water, heat, and waste to make the building as energy-neutral as possible.

In your room, you’ll notice smart lighting and refillable Ruby Care amenity bottles, along with renewable natural materials and pre-loved furniture, to add character and cut our carbon footprint.

Overlooking Amstelkwartier, one of Amsterdam’s newest neighbourhoods, Ruby Emma is located in the south of the city centre - just a five-minute stroll from the banks of the Amstel and pretty Park Somerlust.

Brunch-lovers can be in trendy de Pijp for coffee and waffles in around 20 minutes by Metro, or 15 on two wheels, while the Dutch masters of Museumplein and the city’s pretty canals are a few stops further on by tram.

For those in search of a rural idyll, the historic village of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel is a half-hour bike ride upstream.

Spaklerweg Metro station is a few minutes’ walk from Emma, from where it’s a 10-minute hop to Amsterdam Centraal. And you can be at the airport in under half an hour with a quick change en route.

Parking

We have our own garage at the hotel, where you can park your car comfortably. A ticket costs €22.40 per day, and we also offer parking spaces with integrated EV charging stations for the same price.

To save yourself a spot, just book directly through "ParkBee".

Lean Luxury

Like you, we travel a lot. And wherever we go, we expect three things: a great night’s sleep, a powerful shower and top-notch connections – both to the city and the WiFi.

What we’re less keen on is paying for extras we never use. In dynamic cities bursting with Michelin stars and foodie pop-ups, room service sandwiches just don’t cut the mustard.

So we set out to create the best of both worlds – hotels with style and substance, but none of those expensive extras.

It’s what we call Lean Luxury.

To us, luxury means laid-back comfort in characterful surroundings, close to the heart of the city.

The lean part is all about being smart with space, streamlining things behind the scenes and doing away with the things you don’t need.
